Bianca Severijns
Bianca Severijns (b.1964) is a Dutch-Israeli artist, born in the Netherlands and currently living and working in Israel. Severijns creates her multifaceted, striking artworks by continuously exploring the paper medium. Rooted in a multicultural background, her art explores themes of displacement, identity, and migration that stem from personal narratives, as well as nature’s cycles. With the hope of starting anew, Severijns' art invites reflection on our shared world.
Her self-developed manipulating paper techniques are based on layering, merging, and weaving hundreds of small, hand-torn paper pieces into sculptural tapestries, murals, reliefs, and three-dimensional objects. The repetitive act of tearing paper creates a rugged, rough finish on each piece, emulating life itself with all its beauty and harshness, representing life’s imperfections.
Her works have been exhibited at the 2019 Venice Biennial; Gustav-Lübcke Museum in Hamm, Germany; the 2020 and the 2023 Craft & Design Biennial; Museum of the Seam, Jerusalem, Israel; the 2021 and 2023 Shanghai Paper Biennial; the 2022 International Paper Biennial in Haacht, Belgium; and Periscope Gallery, Tel Aviv, where her first solo exhibition was held in 2019.
Severijns' works are in private collections worldwide, including the Gustav-Lübcke Museum collection. She is a member of the IAPMA (The International Association of Papermakers and Paper Artists).
